This painting the inspiration for the entire collection. In my novel, Canvas, I referred to the hills between Coleraine and Casterton like ‘plaited artisan bread’. They are one of the most beautiful places in the world. I wanted to paint a view, especially in spring, of these green rolling hills, and the magnificence of their scale. For the first time, I included livestock, and these tiny sheep took me days! Each one has their own personality and posture. I really felt this painting set me on this incredible path for months, where all I wanted to do was discover new views, new light, and see my own landscapes with a fresh eye.
